This lecture examines how we understand what trauma does to the mind and body and explores the rich history of trauma, as considered by some of the great thinkers of the western canon’s past. This foundational approach provides insights into our modern perceptions of and approaches to discussing, treating, and reimagining trauma and how it inhabits the body.
Foundations of Trauma focuses on the history and physiology of trauma. With insights from Charles Darwin, Sigmund Freud, Pierre Janet, and Ivan Pavlov, Dr. van der Kolk lays the groundwork for understanding how trauma is lived out in heart-breaking, gut-wrenching sensations and how traumatic experiences condition responses and predispose the traumatized to a fixation on what happened to them. Because treating trauma requires more than talk, we will examine why we must manage states of hyperarousal with deep, visceral experiences in order to rewrite our internal maps of the world and restore a sense of safety. We will examine the role of interpersonal rhythms and attunement in establishing a sense of self and community and consider how trauma affects self-awareness and self-regulation.
Building on the foundational conception of trauma, this lecture explores the neuroscience of trauma and a spectrum of body-centered interventions aimed at helping people integrate traumatic memories. At the core of trauma’s persistence is the dysfunction it induces in the brain and body. Neuroscience gives us a window into the consequences of both limited traumatic experiences and chronic trauma. Within that context, you will learn how trauma rearranges the brain’s wiring - specifically areas dedicated to pleasure, engagement, control, and trust.This lecture will show how trauma affects the developing mind and brain, and teach how trauma affects self-awareness and self-regulation.
This lecture will discuss and demonstrate affect regulation techniques, examine ways to deal with fragmented self-experience, and teach the benefits of yoga, EMDR, meditation, neurofeedback, music, and theater.
Bessel van der Kolk, MD is a pioneer clinician, researcher and teacher in the area of posttraumatic stress. His work uniquely integrates developmental, neurobiological, psychodynamic, somatic and interpersonal aspects of the impact of trauma and its treatment.
His #1 New York Times Science best seller, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Treatment of Trauma transforms our understanding of traumatic stress, revealing how it literally rearranges the brain’s wiring—specifically areas dedicated to pleasure, engagement, control, and trust. He shows how these areas can be reactivated through innovative treatments including body work, psychodrama, mindfulness techniques, parts work, yoga, and neurofeedback, Dr. van der Kolk and his various collaborators have published extensively on the impact of trauma on development, such as dissociative problems, borderline personality and self-mutilation, cognitive development, memory, and the psychobiology of trauma. He has published over 150 peer reviewed scientific articles on such diverse topics as neuroimaging, self-injury, memory, neurofeedback, Developmental Trauma, yoga, theater and EMDR.
He is founder of the Trauma Center (now the Trauma Research Foundation) in Boston, MA; past President of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, and Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University Medical School. He regularly teaches at universities and hospitals around the world.
